Nokia E71 out now on 3

Tags: , , ,

Available in white or grey, the new Nokia E71 is a Symbian smartphone with a full QWERTY keypad and a 2.4 inch display. Measuring just 10mm thick this is a very slim messaging device and could be a real alternative to a BlackBerry. Email messaging is well supported with plenty of configuration options including Gmail, Yahoo!, Hotmail and Microsoft Exchange.

With a built-in GPS receiver, the Nokia E71 comes loaded with the new Nokia Maps 2.0 application, helping you to find the best routes or explore any city for restaurants, attractions and other points of interest. The 3 megapixel autofocus camera also makes use of GPS by geotagging your photos with their exact location.

The Nokia E71 is a 3G phone with HSDPA for high speed data downloads. It also has Wi-fi connectivity, which is great for browsing the web or accessing emails when in a Wi-fi area.

Samsung i740 smartphone to forgo 3G?

Tags: , ,

News flash: there are apparently still smartphone buyers in the world who don’t care about high-speed data. Yeah, we can’t fathom it either, but Samsung is apparently taking that belief to heart with the rumored i740, a spiritual successor to the i710 series. The Windows Mobile 6.1 device, it seems, would go cold turkey on all forms of quick downloads — 3G and WiFi alike — but hang on to GPS, an FM radio, 2.8-inch touchscreen, 3 megapixel camera with flash, Bluetooth, and microSD slot. The metal (or merely metallic, perhaps) casing looks good enough for a higher-end device at first glance, so if they can keep the package ridiculously cheap, we might be willing to look past the inevitable descent into insanity that comes with a slow-ass mobile browsing experience.

Willcom’s full Summer ‘08 lineup

In addition to the 03, Willcom has unveiled a pair of other handsets for release this summer on its Japanese PHS airwaves. The 03’s a hard one to top — pretty much any smartphone, a morphing keypad, and a WVGA display is going to make things tough on the competition — but Sharp has a second entry in the trio with the D4. Like the 03, the D4 packs Windows Mobile and a full QWERTY board, but unlike the 03, the D4 flips up all Kaiser-style, which should be just perfect for showing off the WSVGA (yes, wide super VGA) display. On the simpler end of the spectrum, the Willcom 9 is a chunky, blocky flip with a QVGA display, 1.3 megapixel camera, and NetFront browser that’ll be available in black or white. Kind of anticlimactic when you put it up against those other two, but not everyone wants a smartphone. No, not even in Japan.
